Scarlet, I And The Wine
(Johan Bengtsson)
We went in my parents’ car
To a party on an island in the east
It was Scarlet, Gabrielle and I
And two friends we had in common
We stopped along the way
To eat at a restaurant
I didn’t understand the menu
But Scarlet worked it out
And ordered in Ukrainian
I didn’t know you spoke it
But you have always been a clever girl
I suppose
We went on to the city on the island
Where we were staying overnight
Then Gabrielle decided to go on her own
And she wouldn’t let me drive her there
She insisted on a cab and went there alone
I found it hard to take, but I guess I know where she went
We walked the city, Scarlet, I and my friends
Living alone doesn’t suit me that well
I said and Scarlet just laughed
We went to the party the next day
On the other side of the bay
It looked just like my childhood home
A surreal suburban dream
But everyone was dressed up
And the house was painted with gold
I walked around the garden
And down to the bay
To watch the city on the other side
Glittering in the evening sun
And it was so easy, just so easy
To jump over there and back
Later in the evening
When the dark had fallen outside
We sat there in the candlelight
Scarlet, I and the wine
We talked and talked and laughed
And suddenly we kissed
I know how weird it sounds
But it was her kisses I had missed
It was her kisses I had missed
We started to make out
In a sofa, and I think
That they might have seen us
And Scarlet, does it matter to you?
If so, it matters to me
And the last thing I remember was a kiss
And then a glance
Of your underwear
